Course Description
This comprehensive course explores the intersection of medical emergencies, patient care, and dental malpractice claims. Through a legal and clinical lens, it examines the causes, consequences, and prevention of malpractice claims related to informed consent, pharmacologic decisions, and management of medically compromised patients. Featuring real case studies and practical risk management strategies, the course equips dental professionals with the tools and knowledge necessary to identify potential pitfalls in clinical practice, improve documentation and decision-making, and ultimately protect both patient safety and professional integrity.

Course Objectives
At the conclusion of this presentation, the participants will be able to:

  • Identify common medical emergencies and conditions in dental practice that contribute to malpractice claims, and understand how to respond effectively.
  • Understand the legal concepts and requirements related to dental malpractice and informed consent, particularly under Wisconsin law.
  • Evaluate pharmacologic considerations, including opioid prescribing practices and their risks, and implement safer alternatives when appropriate.
  • Apply risk management strategies in clinical decision-making, documentation, patient communication, and referrals to reduce liability and enhance patient safety
