Planning a Summer Vacation? Don’t Forget Your Insurance!

While making your travel plans, it is a good time to review your insurance policies in case you or a family member are in an auto accident or someone becomes ill while you are traveling.

“Rental car insurance is still a point of confusion for many auto owners. Most insurance policies do provide collision and comprehensive coverage for rental cars in any state or country, so you can refuse the extra insurance coverage at the counter,” says Jeremy Kirst, Personal Lines Account Representative. “If you are not sure whether your policy does cover you, I would be happy to help.”

In addition, major credit card companies and other outlets (the rental car agency) will provide insurance coverage for your rental car. However, these options may not provide full coverage and may have exclusions so it is very important to understand the limits in the contract.

Theft can also be an issue when traveling. Many travel websites offer tips and guidance for keeping your property safe on vacation. “However, if your GPS, cell phone, portable DVD player or other items are stolen from your rental car, it may be covered under your homeowners or renters policy,” says Kirst. This also applies to items stolen from a hotel room.

And, while no one wants to think about becoming sick or being injured on vacation, it can happen. When traveling within the United States, most auto, home and health insurance policies will be sufficient to protect you while you travel. If you are travelling internationally, these policies may not provide you with adequate coverage.

“Purchasing a travel insurance policy should cover you in the event of an emergency overseas,” says Kirst. “Typically, a comprehensive travel insurance policy will cost a percentage of the price of your trip. One of the biggest benefits of purchasing this coverage is the emergency medical evacuation. The costs to airlift you off a cruise ship or to a hospital can climb as high as $50,000 and you would be responsible for the costs without this coverage.”

“Another advantage is the 24-hour telephone assistance that many travel insurers provide. They can help you find a local pharmacy, get a replacement set of glasses, find an English-speaking doctor or reputable hospital and more,” Kirst noted.
